Once every four years

The Olympic Games draw near. This amazing event occurs every four years and unites all the nations of the world. This is a sports event that supposed to emphasize the commonalities between us and draw together conflicting countries. Is it really so?

The Olympic Games is a political event by any means. First of all, it a competition among the world powers, showing which one can invest more in sports. Don’t forget that large investment in sports is an indicator of the good economy of a state. This was the competition between the USA and the USSR during the cold war, and now China wants to show off her every increasing power. On the other hand, conflicts between nations always affect events such as the Olympics. The Arab countries will almost never play against Israel in any sports event, the Americans boycotted the Moscow Olympics, Egypt boycotted the 1956 Olympics following the Sinai war etc. But, in my opinion, the most interesting boycotts performed in the 1976 Olympics. From one side, the African countries boycotted the games as a protest against the Apartheid policy of South Africa. In the same games, China pressured to prevent Taiwan from participating in the games under the name “The Republic of China”.

So, as we see, the Olympics did serve quite a few times as a stage for political opinions. That is way I call to all the potential viewers of the Beijing Olympics to boycott the games, not to watch it. Why? For decades, Chinese regime performs horrible crimes against the Chinese people and against the Tibetan nation. China invaded to Tibet in 1950 in the false accusation that it belongs to her historically. The atrocities that are acted against the Tibetans are written in many resources. On top of that, human rights in China hardly exist under the current totalitarian regime. For example, people are caught in the streets, blamed for crimes and executed just in order to fill monthly police quotas.

Thus, those whose conscious bothers them, who has some empathy for the suffer all over the world, will rightly do if they will show it, act upon it, and boycott the coming Olympic games the summer. I will.
